The Myna Mahila Foundation

Myna Mahila’s cause is a simple one: to provide affordable sanitary hygiene to women, while breaking the social taboos surrounding menstruation.

If you identify a problem, don’t wait for the perfect time, just start and make a difference. You have to make it happen.

By employing local women to manufacture low cost sanitary products, and then sell them door to door in Mumbai’s slums, Myna is able to reach women who would usually be house-bound. These jobs and house-calls start a conversation, connect women, and are gradually helping to break down a long-standing social taboo which can cause embarrassment, isolation, and prevent women from reaching their potential.

Before I joined Myna Mahila Foundation, I would be scared to even leave my house to go to the market. But the women I have met have changed my life. I never want to go back home at the end of the day.

Her Royal Highness The Duchess of Sussex, Meghan Markle, visited Myna Mahila in January 2017 and, impressed with their work to help Mumbai’s women, became an advocate of foundation. Suhani was invited to the wedding of His Royal Highness Prince Henry of Wales and Meghan Markle in May 2018, in recognition of her work in India.

Whilst in London for the wedding, The Queen’s Commonwealth Trust was lucky enough to meet Suhani and attend a special fundraising event for The Myna Mahila Foundation. Guests were treated to authentic Bombay street cuisine, Indian dance, and learnt about the work of Myna Mahila, with speeches from Suhani and her team.

Since 2015, Myna Mahila has continually grown in size and scale, and is aiming to reach 25,000 women every month, by the end of 2018.

The foundation is empowering local communities, enabling women to find meaningful employment, gain education, make friends, and improve hygiene in their local area.
