HRH The Duke of Sussex joins the party at QCT event in Zambia

In November 2018, the President of The Queen’s Commonwealth Trust, HRH The Duke of Sussex, was in Zambia on an official two-day visit. While there, The Duke took the opportunity to see the work of QCT first-hand, attending an event hosted by one our partners, Circus Zambia.

Arriving at the Circus Zambia hub, The Duke was greeted by young founders Gift Chansa and Charlotte Groen, who started the project in order to help more young people become change makers in their local communities, using circus as a means to unleash their full potential. Based in Chibolya, Lusaka, Circus Zambia is working hard to help change the image of the area, focusing on youth leadership and creating positive outcomes for Chibolya's youth. Gift and Charlotte accompanied The Duke on a tour of the hub, where everyone was treated to energetic performances by the Circus Zambia crew, creating a real party atmosphere!

Joining Circus Zambia and HRH were a number of other young leaders from QCT supported projects. Our friends at CAMA – the alumni network of CamFed, were there filling the space with their vibrant energy and singing. CAMA is now made up of over 120,000 young women who are breaking the cycle of poverty and driving real change in their communities through activism and philanthropy. Also present was Regina Mtonga, cofounder of Asikana network - an organization that seeks to increase the number of females participating in STEM related courses and jobs in Zambia, as well as Alina Karima of The Women’s Economic Empowerment Project and Brighton Koana, founder of Agents of Change Foundation.

These young leaders took to the stage alongside HRH to speak about their work, their experiences and their passion for driving positive social change. The Duke then took to the stage himself, thanking the crowd for the warmest of welcomes and encouraging them all to continue on in their important work. He specifically referenced the potential of young leadership to create change, saying “I see the great strides you are taking every day in the service of others and how lives and communities are being impacted by this work. You have the knowledge and relatability that will inspire your generation to get started in a big or small way, unleashing a wave of talent right around the world.’

A day of inspirational conversation and performance, you can see the highlights from the day in the video below or by heading over to our YouTube channel.
